Passport Change
By: Maryel Doyon

5/19/2011 - Due to changes in federal regulations, the U.S. Department of State Passport Services has stopped allowing facilities, such as the City Clerk’s Office to process passports. The regulation prohibits offices that can print, create or amend birth certificates from processing passports due to a concern of falsifying birth certificates. Unless the two functions are physically separate we cannot be an acceptance agent.

We are sorry for this inconvenience. The City Clerk’s office has been processing passports and offering this service since 2001. The City is in the process of designating another department and having the staff trained so the City can continue to process passports.

In the meantime, the City Clerk’s staff is able to continue to take passport photos in the Clerk’s office. You can apply for passports on the Federal government’s web site www.travel.state.gov/passport, or by visiting the Portland Post Office on Forest Avenue. Please check their website www.usps.com for their hours of operation.
