Portland School Budget Vote May 15, 2012 (4/9/2012)
Next month, Portland voters will be asked to approve the Portland Public School System's budget in a citywide referendum. Maine’s School Administrative Reorganization Law requires all school districts to hold elections for approval of their budgets. The budget must be approved by a majority of voters.

Dog Licenses For 2011 Expired December 31, 2011 (12/7/2011)
Pursuant to State of Maine Laws, all dogs six months of age or older must be licensed. Dog licenses are issued for a calendar year and are due January 1st of each year. If you have not yet licensed your dog(s) for 2012, you must do so.

Ranked Choice Voting Rules Adopted (9/20/2011)
PORTLAND, Maine – Last night, the City of Portland City Council accepted rules for the city’s Mayoral election, which will be determined by ranked choice voting (sample ballot attached). Ranked choice voting allows voters the opportunity to rank as many of the Mayoral candidates as they would like according to preference. Voters will rank candidates in order of 1st choice, 2nd choice and so on, until either the voter no longer has a preference or all candidates have been ranked.

Notary and Dedimus Justice Services (7/27/2011)
The City Clerk's office will resume offering Notary Services and Dedimus Justice service starting August 1, 2011. The fee for Notary Service will be $5.00 per document and the fee for Dedimus Justice is 10.00 per document.

Passport Change (5/19/2011)
Due to changes in federal regulations, the U.S. Department of State Passport Services has stopped allowing facilities, such as the City Clerk’s Office to process passports. The regulation prohibits offices that can print, create or amend birth certificates from processing passports due to a concern of falsifying birth certificates. Unless the two functions are physically separate we cannot be an acceptance agent.

Save the City’s Records (8/16/2007)
If someone wants a copy of a birth certificate, he/she goes to the Municipal Clerk’s office. The same goes for obtaining a marriage license. We do not just have the records of Portland residents; if the event occurred in the City of Portland, we have a copy.

We have ongoing openings to work at the polls. There are two positions at the polls that we are trying to fill, Deputy Registrar and Election Clerk.

The City Clerk’s office is located in Room 203 of City Hall and is responsible for
conducting all elections, voter registration, maintaining all City records including
Council proceedings and serves as custodian of city ordinances, and
other public documents. The office issues various state and local licenses and
permits which include business licenses,
hunting,
fishing,
dog and
marriage
licenses, domestic partnership registrations, birth and
death certificates.
