Marc Spiller Receives Robert B. Ganley Public Service Award
Public Services employee given city’s highest honor for his dedication and commitment to public service

PORTLAND, Maine – The City of Portland announces that Marc Spiller, an employee with the Department of Public Services for the past twenty-two years, is the 2009 recipient of the Robert B. Ganley Public Service Award. In a ceremony held last week, City Manager Joseph Gray commended Spiller for his commitment to and service for the City of Portland.

As District Coordinator for Public Services, Spiller manages the delivery of winter operations for the five city districts as well as the Downtown District and following the merging of Public Works and Parks to form Public Services in 2008, Spiller toke on the integration of park and trail maintenance. Spiller’s affable personality and positive attitude has helped not only the Public Services Department, but many other departments and city organizations that have come to depend upon his reliable work ethic. In fact, his nomination came from four departments and two outside organizations that have benefited directly from his work, the Portland Downtown District and Portland Trails.

“The city is lucky to have someone like Marc and it is my honor to announce that he is the recipient of the 2009 Robert B. Ganley Public Service Award,” stated City Manager Gray. “He is always seeking efficiencies and better ways to get the job done, and during these challenging economic times, his efforts and willingness to collaborate with other departments has saved the city money.”

“Marc is someone I can always count on to say “How can I help?” when faced with a challenge,” continued Gray. “As one nominator wrote, “If he can, he will.” Marc embodies the qualities of a true public servant, and I along with the residents of Portland congratulate and thank Marc for a job done exceedingly well.”

A Portland native and Portland High School graduate, Spiller lives in the city with his wife and their son.

The Robert B. Ganley Public Service Award was established in 2002 in honor of the dedication, knowledge and passion for municipal public service characterized by the life of City Manager Robert B. Ganley. Nominations are solicited from employees late in the year and a review committee selects the employee based upon his or her efficient use of city resources, a desire to improve the common good, a concern for individual citizens and the adherence that good public service is recognized by the substance of the performance.
