CA$H Program Kicks-off January 23rd
1/11/2010 -
CA$H Greater Portland, a community coalition empowering families and individuals to make the most of their money, will be opening its free tax preparation sites on Saturday, January 23. Families and individuals who made less than $50,000 in 2009, can have their federal and state
income taxes prepared for free by IRS-certified volunteer tax preparers, and get connected to free programs and services in the community to help them make the most of their money. Every year, 25% of those living in Greater Portland do not claim the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), leaving up to $5,657 unclaimed by qualifying households.
CA$H Greater Portland tax sites will be open January 23 - March 6, with additional AARP Tax-Aide locations open throughout the tax season. Those wishing to utilize this free service should:
1. Collect tax statements from ALL income received in 2009 (W-2, 1099, 1098, SSA and unemployment).
2. Gather Social Security cards for each person claimed on the tax return.
3. Dial 2-1-1 (it's free!) to find a tax site.
4. Call the tax site to schedule an appointment: other qualifications may apply (interpreters available upon request).
5. Visit the CA$H web-site @ www.cashgp.org
