Brownfields Redevelopment, Former Adams School, Portland, Maine
The former Adams School is proposed to be converted into 16 units of affordable housing. Previous investigations have determined that certain environmental remediation activities may be required prior to and concurrent with redevelopment. An application has been submitted to fund remediation efforts through the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) program. DECD’s RLF program is supported by a cooperative agreement with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
As required for participation in this program, a draft Analysis of Brownfield Cleanup Alternatives and Remedial Action Plan (ABCA/RAP) has been prepared and submitted to the Maine Department of Environmental Protection for review. The draft ABCA/RAP summarizes the findings of previous environmental investigations and presents a description of potential remediation options. In addition, the draft ABCA/RAP compares the remediation options and presents a proposed remediation plan.
Copies of reports detailing completed environmental investigations, as well as a copy of the draft ABCA/RAP, are available for public review at the following location:

The public is encouraged to review and comment on the draft ABCA/RAP during the public comment period, which will begin on April 3, 2012 and extend to May 3, 2012.
An informational meeting regarding the draft ABCA/RAP and Brownfields redevelopment project will be held between 6:30 PM and 7:30 PM on Tuesday April 17, 2012 at Avesta Housing, 307 Cumberland Avenue, Portland, Maine.
