Maine Municipal Employees Health Trust Income Protection Plan

All permanent employees working 20 hours or more per week are eligible to purchase income protection through Maine Municipal Employees Health Trust (MMEHT). An employee has 60 days from date of hire to enroll without providing evidence of insurability (EOI). An EOI application is required for any employee wishing to enroll after 60 days or to upgrade coverage. Coverage is effective upon approval.

In the event of an accident or illness (not work-related), an employee is entitled to receive 40%, 55% or 70% (depending upon their election) of their gross salary. Benefits are paid on a weekly basis and continue for a maximum of 52 weeks per disability. Benefit payments begin on the first day of an accident, the eighth day of an illness. Employees have 90 days to file claim paperwork.

Cost is $1.90 per $100 of coverage purchased. Income Protection is paid for one month in advance and deductions are taken 4 weeks of each month (months in which there are 5 pay dates, no deduction on the fifth pay date). To calculate your costs, take your annual salary and round up to nearest dollar, then multiply by: .0001583 for 40%, .0002177083 for 55% and .000277083 for 70% of gross salary. Rate increases are effective January 1.
