One Maine One Portland (OMOP)
Mission Statement: “To foster nurturing and healthy relationships, environments and programs that encourage positive youth development and enable all young people in Greater Portland to live substance-free.”
One Maine One Portland is a community coalition that is funded, in part, by the Maine Office of Substance Abuse. We first came together in 2003 with a common goal of reducing 30-day tobacco use and 2-week binge drinking by Portland’s youth. Since that time we have changed our original mission to one that reflects a more holistic prevention approach. Members of the Steering Committee include representatives from:
OMOP has helped obtain funding to operate the Reconnecting Youth Program in Portland High Schools. Reconnecting Youth is a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) model program that uses a peer group approach to building life skills.
OMOP and the 21 Reasons Coalition have come together to develop a plan to address youth substance abuse and the issues surrounding it. The plan is based on data from surveys and public meetings that took place in the spring of 2006. More than 700 community members participated with almost half of the responses from local youth. We have created a plan that represents the priorities they identified as well as the recommendations and priorities of the Maine Office of Substance Abuse and proven national programs. The plan will be released by mid-2007.
The OMOP Steering Committee meets on the second Tuesday of every month from 11:30AM-1:00PM.
