1938- Engine Co. 11
Engine Co. 11 originally was Hose Co. 5 of the Deering Fire Department in the town of Deering and in 1892, the city of Deering.
On February 17, 1890, a meeting was held to form a hose company for the hand-drawn, 2-wheel hose reel carriage, carrying 500 ft. of hose, the town purchased for fire protection in East Deering. A small hose house was built for the carriage on land owned by L. W. Dyer, near the bridge and Veranda Street.
In 1895, hose company members built a 1 & ½-story fire barn on city land on Main St., near Randall St.
In 1897, Hose-5 was reassigned Hose-1's 1894 1-horse, 4-wheel hose reel cart, with 1,000 ft. of hose.
On March 1, 1899, the city of Deering annexed to the city of Portland. DFD Hose-5 was renumbered Hose Co. 11 of the Portland Fire Department. Deering’s Main Street was renamed Washington Avenue.
A new G. M. Stanwood & Co. 4-wheel hose wagon, carrying 1,000 ft. of hose, went into service in May.
In 1901, the city renovated an old 1 & ½-story barn on Ocean Avenue, near Washington Avenue, at Lunt's Corner to relocate Hose Co. 11. In 1902, a Permanent Driver was appointed for the hose wagon.
The relocation improved response time and long, uphill runs to North Deering and Morrill’s Corner.
In 1908, East Deering citizens requested improved fire protection. A 1-door, 2-story, wood framed firehouse was built on Ocean Avenue, across the street from the 1901 fire barn. A 2nd Permanent Man was appointed. In 1909, a horse-drawn ladder & chemical truck, called "Combination-11", was ordered and Hose Co. 11 became a "Double-Company". Two more Permanent Men were appointed for the 2-piece company. In 1911, a Permanent Lieutenant was appointed, and in 1913, a Permanent Captain.
In 1925, Hose 11 motorized with the former 1924-Reo Supply Truck, rebuilt into a hose & chemical truck in the PFD Repair Shop. The horse stalls in the firehouse were torn down. The horse-drawn combination and hose wagon were kept as reserve equipment, until 1929, and then disposed of.
In 1938, a Seagrave 500-gpm pumper was purchased, and Hose Co. 11 was upgraded to Engine Co. 11.
In 1957, a 2-bay, 1-story, brick fire station was built across the street on the same spot as the 1901 fire barn. The station address number was changed to # 474. From 1957-1963, The District-2 District Chief was quartered here. From 1966-1971, Ladder Co. 3 relocated here from Bracket Street with Engine 11.
In 1994, E-11 members purchased and designed a sign to place in front of the station. The artist was PFD Deputy Chief Wyman. It reads, "Engine Company 11, Protecting East Deering Since 1890".
