The Portland Community Free Clinic provides comprehensive primary and some specialty health care to persons who are uninsured, low-income, and have no medical care. All services provided at the clinic are free and all of our services are provided by volunteers.
There are several ongoing opportunities to volunteer at the Portland Community Free Clinic.
At this time, the Clinic has a need for people to volunteer as:
1. Receptionist – This role does not require the volunteer to have any previous medical experience. The receptionist’s responsibilities include: checking patients in at the front desk and notifying the clinic manager when they arrive, instructing patients on the paperwork they need to fill out, making reminder phone calls to the patients, and pulling their charts for the following evening.
2. Registered Nurse – This volunteer opportunity requires a current Maine RN license. The RN volunteer is responsible for bringing the patient to the exam room, obtaining the vital signs and brief reason for the visit, and preparing the rooms for the next patients. The RN may also be asked to perform other duties such as administer vaccines or review with the patient their medication/problem list.
3. Medical Doctor/Nurse Practitioner/Physicians Assistant – This volunteer opportunity requires a current Maine license in the practitioner’s field. We use medical providers who work in specialty areas as well as primary care and internal medicine. The medical practitioner is responsible for providing primary health care services or specialty care within their scope of practice.
Volunteers are asked to provide clinic coverage one evening a month (Monday through Thursday, 6 to 8 p.m.). All medical volunteers have malpractice coverage for their time at the clinic.
Please consider joining a great team of community volunteers who provide a vital service to the greater Portland community. For more information, please call the clinic, 874-8982.
