Historic Preservation

6/19/2007 - Volunteer(s) to Scan Historic Documents Needed. In 1924, every taxable building in the city was photographed as part of a tax re-valuation process. These photographs are a priceless historic record and provide a fascinating glimpse into the City's development. While the City wants to continue to make them available to the public for reference purposes, the original photographs are in very fragile condition. The City hopes to scan the photos and store them digitally, so that they can continue to be accessible while the originals are properly archived for longterm preservation. Volunteers are needed to help scan and catalogue the photographs. For residents interested in Portland's history and architecture, this is an exceptional volunteer opportunity.
