  2. State of Mind: Becoming Maine

    July 3, 2020, 10:00 AM - January 30, 2021, 5:00 PM @ Maine Historical Society

The history of the region now known as Maine did not begin at statehood in 1820. What was Maine before it was a state? How did Maine separate from Massachusetts? How has the Maine we experience today been shaped by thousands of years of history? State of Mind: Becoming Maine will analyze Maine as the homeland of the Wabanaki people, as a European province, as part of the District of Massachusetts, and the State of Maine. Maine's Bicentennial milestone will be considered in relation to: Maine's formation as a state 200 years ago; the significance of the Missouri Compromise; how the idea of "Maine" is perceived by people today; and how the changing landscape could alter Maine's future. The exhibition will feature manuscripts and items relating to statehood, historic maps, contemporary artwork, and opportunities to learn about the experiences of Wabanaki people alongside the early settlers, including: European American, African American, and Acadien communities.

  5. Fort Gorges Sea Kayak Tour

    July 5, 2020, 9:30 AM - September 15, 2020, 12:30 PM @ Fort Gorges

Fort Gorges, a Civil War-era granite fort surrounded by water, is one of the most fascinating spots in Casco Bay, and it's only accessible by small boat. This three-hour trip is the best way to combine the experience of sea kayaking on the Maine coast with exploring one of the region's most interesting historic landmarks. During the early days of statehood, Portland operated as one of the primary ports for the East Coast. After being burned down multiple times, several forts were designed and implemented to protect our harbor. This tour gives people the chance to explore one of those forts in a unique and hands-on way.
