Playground Renovation Updates

Payson Park Playground and Active Recreation Project; survey results are in!
Public input on the Payson Park Active Recreation and Playground Project is being processed after over a month of survey feedback has been shared with the department. We had a great participation rate, with over 400 surveys completed.  Huge help was given from the Friends of Payson Park (FoPP) and FoPP President Susan Lavigne. Friends helped share awareness of the survey and conducted in-person surveys from playground visitors. Results will be updated on the project websiteor directly at the results page.
Primary results showed nearly universal support for play equipment upgrades for young children, and adding a new feature or two that can better serve older children. It’s important for improvements to be done in a way that is harmonious and safe with the younger children's play experiences, and provides more challenge for all ages enjoying the space.
A trail loop was also a strongly supported new feature, as were spray pad repairs. A good amount of support was shared for active recreation features that had challenges similar to a ninja warrior style equipment feature, and a flexible open area for small groups or individuals. Opportunities for additional shade tree plantings and places for sitting / gathering will also be developed in the design.
Lyseth Playground Renovation Updates
The Lyseth Playground Renovation is moving forward into design development. Public feedback from survey outreach placed a priority on addressing existing drainage issues in the space, and creating play opportunities for more swings, horizontal and vertical climbing experiences, and settings with natural play opportunties. Better playground circulation was supported, and new pavement markings and defined boundaries between play areas and parking spaces are proposed. Keeping balance and sliding opportunities for children was important, as were providing spaces for caregivers to sit and meet with neighbors while watching their families in the new space.
Preliminary cost estimates are being worked through this fall, with prioritization being given to improving the playground drainage, playspace circulation & path improvements, as well as equipment upgrades. Equipment upgrades will particularly focus toward swings, climbing, slides/play structure, and natural play opportunities. The design shown is a master plan level document, showing possibilities for a pre-k playground expansion and basketball court realignment to the north of the existing play area in the future.
