Tree Planting Season Update!

TreePlanting_NewsFlash

'Portland Maine - The Forest City' -  Portland, Maine has been known as the 'Forest City' dating back to the early 1800's.  Our first recorded street tree planting was on Washington Avenue where a line of Lombardy Poplar were planted near the Eastern Promenade to make the area active for residential development in 1796. Today, we no longer plant Lombardy Poplars but we do plant a wide variety of native and exotic trees via a number of programs.  Our 'Co-Op' tree program is perhaps the most popular, in this program residents select a tree from our Recommended Tree List at one of three local nurseries (including Peaks Island) and our city's Forestry crew picks up and properly plants the tree. See our 'Co-Op' tree program for more information (species we recommend linked below).
Tree planting takes place in May & June only. During this time we plant an average of 150 trees city wide, so far our forestry crew has planted roughly 85 trees this season. We look to areas in Portland with the greatest need along with finding plantable spaces that can sustain a healthy tree. Trees add many environmental and health benefits to urban living, Portland Parks & Recreation Department is always looking at ways to extend greenery to our city streets and our Parks & Public Grounds.

Please visit our website for more information about our various planting programs and to learn more about the species we recommend.
Some of the trees planted, include:
Adirondack Crabapple, Redpointe Maple, Green Mountain Sugar Maple, Pink Myst Cherry Tree, Mushashino Zelkova Tree (seen in photos above), Beacon Oak Tree, Princeton Elm Tree
