Landlords Encouraged to Participate in Rental Market Survey to Assist with Housing Policy

The City of Portland has hired a Maine-based firm named 45 North Research, LLC, to conduct a rental market survey of local market conditions. This survey is being done to provide important housing data for the Council’s Housing Committee.

“We encourage property owners to respond to this survey to help us understand the market for rental housing in the City,” said Councilor Jill Duson, Chair of the Housing Committee.

A priority of the 2017 Housing Committee was to create a current situation report on housing policy, availability, and affordability. The 2017 Housing Report was presented to the Housing Committee at its meeting on October 26, 2017. While analyzing the report, the Committee realized that it was difficult to find a resource with local rental market data.

The survey includes six short questions targeted to Portland landlords. The survey has been forwarded to 2,600 landlords. The results will be summarized in a report to the City’s Housing Committee.

The City is encouraging landlords to participate in the survey and hopeful the results will help guide the Housing Committee’s discussion on policies and initiatives to address housing affordability.
