State Street Closure from Park Avenue to Cumberland Avenue Begins August 28, 2017

Section of State Street will be completely closed to vehicle traffic for 3 months 

PORTLAND, Maine -- Beginning August 28, 2017, the City’s State Street Infrastructure Project will enter State Street inbound of Park Avenue through Cumberland Avenue. This work is part of the City's effort to reduce Combined Sewer Overflows into Back Cove. The work includes the installation of a new storm drain and the replacement of the existing sanitary sewer. Portland Water District and Unitil Natural Gas will also be replacing their mains within the street. Once the utility work is complete, the roadway will be reconstructed with new pavement. 

IMPORTANT INFO FOR MOTORISTS:  State Street will be closed from Park Avenue to Cumberland Avenue for approximately three months. The contractor will be working within this zone between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PMMonday thru Friday. During the construction period the roadway will not open to thru traffic at night or on weekends. 

IMPORTANT INFO FOR RESIDENTS:  The contractor will be required to maintain local driveway access within the State Street work zone. The Contractor will also be required to maintain access to Grant Street and Sherman Street during the shutdown.  On street parking along State Street will be heavily restricted during this construction period.  



Westbound Park Avenue Motorists can use Forest Avenue, Mellen Street and Deering Avenue as in-town detour routes.  Eastbound Park Avenue Motorists can access State Street inbound of the work zone via Mellen Street and Cumberland Avenue.  


Southbound I-295 motorists seeking to use State Street (route 77) should expect exit 6 delays and are urged to use exit 5A.  Northbound I-295 motorists are encouraged to use exit’s 4 and 5 to avoid the Construction traffic congestion. 

I-295 Motorists seeking to access the Casco Bay Bridge via State Street (RT. 77) are encouraged to use the Fore River Parkway to West Commercial Street via I-295 Exit 5.
