Mayor & Council to Host Business & Community Forum on Downtown Issues

news alert

Mayor Ethan Strimling and the City Council will host a business and community forum on downtown issues with local businesses and community providers on Wednesday, August 23, 2017 from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM in the Council Chambers on the 2nd floor of City Hall. This event is open to the public.

The forum follows a recent incident at Sisters Gourmet Deli in Monument Square. Owner Michaela McVetty reached out to the City and met with Mayor Strimling and City Manager Jon Jennings to discuss the issues and hear about the ways in which the City is responding to the drug and mental health crisis.

Following those meetings, McVetty asked for a forum in which business owners could come to talk about their experiences downtown around mental health, substance issues, and crime, and see if there are ways in which they can get involved.

“I'm excited by the momentum we have going right now. People are clearly passionate and frustrated by what we're talking about,” said Michaela McVetty, owner of Sisters Gourmet Deli. “The rise in population of those suffering from mental illness, drug addiction, and/or homelessness has become something that none of us can ignore any longer. There are so many in this city we love that are not getting the help they need. If they are taken care of properly, in return, downtown workers, residents, and business owners can feel safer.”

"I really appreciate how Michaela has handled the situation in her business. She has turned a scary situation into an opportunity for all of us to grow and learn,” said Mayor Ethan Strimling. “I look forward to hearing from more business owners and what they experience as we seek to find solutions to these issues in our city and state."
