Ludlow Pond Management

In the heart of the Deering Center neighborhood lies a beautiful and much-loved community amenity: Ludlow Pond. Originally the area served as a racetrack, until the city acquired it and transformed it into a skating pond in 1934. While it has changed shape over the years, the pond is still home to countless pick-up hockey games, toddlers learning to skate, and also is home to a wide variety of wildlife. The pond also serves a minor function as stormwater detention and flood control. The Parks Division manages and maintains the pond itself primarily as a skating rink and stormwater detention pond, with opportunities for wildlife habitat surrounding.

In 2016 and 2017, work was completed to repair the drain that has been plugged for several years. Some wildlife habitat has been planted, and other areas are being explored for future urban meadow restoration.
