Parks, Recreation & Facilities

Welcome to Parks, Recreation & Facilities Department.  This department consists of four major divisions: Public Assembly Facilities, Parks, Recreation and Building Maintenance. 

The Public Assembly Facilities Division is responsible for the scheduling and management of Merrill Auditorium, Portland Exposition Building, Hadlock Field, Ocean Gateway and Maine State Pier. This division provides all event services including front of house and backstage operations as well as security, concessions and custodial services. Prime Tenant contracts include Portland Symphony Orchestra, Portland Ovations, Portland Sea Dogs, Maine Red Claws and the Portland School Department. In addition, this division oversees the permitting of events in the City’s parks, open spaces and streets and manages large scale outdoor events including the concerts on the Maine State Pier and the annual July 4th celebration on the Eastern Prom. This past year, the division was responsible for over 1,100 events with over 400,000 attendees.

Recreation manages the Portland Ice Arena, Riverside Golf Course and special events at various city parks and administers a variety of youth, adult and senior recreation and aquatic programs.

Building Maintenance is responsible for the maintenance, repair and renovation of a variety of City and School buildings.
